Michel Nation's History and Ongoing Work Toward Reinstatement Featured in Treaty 6 Podcast
The history of Michel Nation and the generations of work toward restoring recognition are highlighted in a recent episode of Canadian Time Machine, a podcast produced by The Walrus Lab.
The episode, A Living Agreement: Treaty 6 at 150, explores the history of Treaty 6, the promises made between First Nations and the Crown in 1876, and the lasting impact of those agreements on Indigenous communities.
The episode features journalist Brandi Morin, who discusses the importance of oral histories, treaty promises, and understanding Indigenous perspectives beyond what was recorded in written agreements.
It also features Beverley Asmann, a descendant of Chief Michel Callihoo and a Board member of the Michel Callihoo Nation Society (MCNS).
Beverley shares her family's experiences, including the impacts of residential schools, the loss of Michel reserve lands, and the 1958 enfranchisement of the Michel Band. She also reflects on the generations of work undertaken by Michel descendants to restore recognition and rebuild their Nation.
These experiences are an important part of Michel Nation's history and help explain the work that continues today.
For generations, Michel descendants have worked to preserve their history, maintain their connections to the Nation, and seek the restoration of recognition. MCNS continues this work through historical and genealogical research, engagement with descendants, and ongoing efforts toward reinstatement of the Michel Band.
The podcast provides an opportunity to better understanding of history, the challenges Michel descendants have faced, and why rebuilding the Nation remains so important.
We encourage descendants, their families, and anyone interested in learning more about Michel Nation's history to listen to the episode.
